ElZA SOARES
Elza Soares (1930–2022) was an iconic Brazilian samba singer hailed as one of the most powerful and influential voices in the history of Brazilian music.
Born into extreme poverty in a Rio de Janeiro favela, she overcame immense personal trauma, racism, and political persecution to achieve international stardom.
Known for her signature raspy voice and fierce stage presence, she was named the "Singer of the Millennium" alongside Tina Turner by BBC Radio in 1999. Over a career spanning more than seven decades, she recorded dozens of albums and became a tireless champion for Black Brazilians, women, and LGBTQ+ rights.
