To understand samba, we have to talk about migration, survival, and community. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, formerly enslaved Afro-Brazilians, workers, and poor families settled in informal hillside communities in Rio de Janeiro and other cities. These neighborhoods grew with limited support from the state but with a deep reserve of human energy. Out of that environment came gatherings filled with percussion, singing, dancing, food, faith, and conversation\u2014the kind of social chemistry that can change a nation.<\/span><\/p>\n

Samba did not appear by magic, even if it can feel magical after two drum breaks and a cold drink. It grew from Afro-Brazilian traditions, especially rhythms and practices carried from Bahia and reshaped in urban communities.
